"The Good Lord Bird," by James McBride

The book is about a young slave boy who gets freed and whisked up by John Brown, who mistakes him for a girl. He survives under this assumed identity, and the book seems to bring up questions about what it meant during the Civil War to be white, black, male, female, etc. Read the review here!
